VOODOO
Voodoo was a very personal passion project for me. It started as a song I wrote, recorded, and produced. The final product was a multimedia creative venture with a published song, music video, and promotional and supporting content.
ACTION
Wrote, recorded, and produced the single.
Played all instruments and sang all vocals on the recording.
Developed storyline to the music video and release campaign.
Created the theme and strategy for the release.
Recruited and managed a team of creatives:
Video:
Camera Operator and Director: Gaby Shubat
Colour Grading: Zack Ness
Behind The Scenes: by Denis Lipman
AC & DC: Taylina Rhoden
Cast:
David Sikoev
Irene Iskenderova
Music:
Mixing & Mastering: Matthew Esmailian
RESULT
Due to the financial restrictions as a student; funding was not allocated to promoting any content. The result of this was low exposure but high engagement.
With 712 followers, I was receiving an average of 2,615 impressions per asset. With the promotional content only existing on Instagram, I received a total of 5,000 streams (summed from all platforms) within the first 2 weeks.
Bottom line:
The release campaign yielded low exposure (due to lack of funding for ads) but high repeat engagement.
However, the project was a success way beyond this for me because of how deeply the audience immersed and connected with the entire project - which ultimately was the goal from the start.
Below are the promotional teasers for the music video.
LYRICS
VERSE ONE:
I met a girl that looked just like a dream
I’ve had before where she would visit me
Spoke like the devil but looked like a queen
Skin like the desert and eyes like the sea
PRE CHORUS ONE:
She said
Do you feel it in your soul
Would you give it all
Just to have some more
She said
Do I make you feel divine?
Would you sell your soul
For mine
CHORUS ONE:
I said
Give me a little Voodoo
VERSE TWO:
Stood there in shock then trembled to my knees
Could not believe what just happened to me
I lost all control and let down my defence
Now in my head I replay the events
PRE CHORUS TWO:
She said
Do you feel it in your soul
Would you give it all
Just to have some more
She said
Do I make you feel divine?
Would you sell your soul
For mine
CHORUS TWO:
I said
Give me a little Voodoo
BRIDGE:
Take control of my body
And possession of my mind
I’m a victim of your voodoo
You’re the goddess in my eyes
Stick your needles in my back
All just to throw my love away
Take my vision and make me blind
Just so I can hear you say

Scene 1
EXT. Alley way
MAN IS STANDING IN AN ALLEY WAY SMOKING A CIGARETTE. HE IS A TALL BUILT MAN, VERY MYSTERIOUS AND ALMOST UNAPPROACHABLE. HE IS BY HIMSELF. HE NOTICES A GIRL WHO WALKS BY, THEY CATCH EACH OTHERS EYES, AND THE VOODOO BEGINS TO TAKE PLACE. THE GIRL HAS A PARTICULAR DEVILISH LOOK, WHERE SHE IS ATTRACTIVE BUT ALSO LOOKS MANIPULATIVE.
HE BEGINS TO FOLLOW HER.
“I met a girl that looked just like a dream I’ve had before where she would visit me”
EXT. CITY STREET SIDEWALK
HE STARTS WALKING AFTER HER, AND FINDS HIMSELF TRYING TO CATCH UP. ALL OF A SUDDEN, HE BEGINS TO STRUT AS HE WALKS, LOOKING CONFUSED.
“Spoke like the devil but looked like a queen skin like the desert and eyes like the sea”
HE THEN BEGINS TO HAVE A SMALL DANCE AS HE WALKS TO HER. HE CANNOT SEEM TO STOP AS HE IS JUST BEING CONTROLLED.
“She said
Do you feel it in your soul
Would you give it all
Just to have some more”
SHE BEGINS TO REALIZE THAT HE IS DANCING BEHIND HER. SHE IS NOT BOTHERED BY THIS AT ALL. IN FACT SHE LIKES THIS.
“She said
Do I make you feel divine?
Would you sell your soul
For mine”
THIS CONTINUES THROUGH THE CHORUS BUT IT IS SEEN FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE. WHERE THE LAST SCENE WAS SEEN FROM A MORE CLOSE UP LENS, MORE PERSONAL, THIS IS SEEN FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET MOVING WITH THEM.
“I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo”
The song now breaks for a second before verse 2 comes on.
THIS SORT OF GAME CONTINUES. HE BEGINS TO FOLLOW HER TRYING TO GET HER ATTENTION.
“Stood there in shock then trembled to my knees
Could not believe what just happened to me”
HE NOW BEGINS TO STRUT AFTER HER, AGIAN NOT KNOWING HOW THIS IS HAPPENING TO HIM. SHE AT THIS POINT IS STILL WALKING NORMALLY YET NOTICES HIM STRUTTING BEHIND HER.
“I lost all control and let down my defence
Now in my head I replay the events”
HE THEN BEGINS TO HAVE A SMALL DANCE AS HE WALKS TO HER. HE CANNOT SEEM TO STOP AS HE IS JUST BEING CONTROLLED.
“She said
Do you feel it in your soul
Would you give it all
Just to have some more”
SHE AGAIN REALIZES THAT HE IS DANCING BEHIND HER. SHE IS NOT BOTHERED BY THIS STILL, AND THIS TIME SHE BEGINS TO STRUT ALONG WITH HIM.
“She said
Do I make you feel divine?
Would you sell your soul
For mine”
SHE IS DANCING NOW AS WELL, NOT JUST THE MAIN CHARACTER, BUT THEY ARE BOTH DANCING. THIS CONTINUES THROUGH THE CHORUS BUT IT IS SEEN FROM A DIFFERENT
ANGLE. WHERE THE LAST SCENE WAS SEEN FROM A MORE CLOSE UP LENS, MORE PERSONAL, THIS IS SEEN FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET MOVING WITH
THEM.
“I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo”
EXT. NEIGHBOURHOOD STREET (TENTATIVE)
NOW THE MAIN IS NOT DANCING ANYMORE BUT IS LOOKING AROUND FOR THE GIRL. SHE HAS NOW DISAPPEARED AS THE STREETS HAVE GOTTEN BUSIER. AS HE LOOKS FOR HER, HE SEES OTHER GIRLS NOT KNOWING IF IT IS THE GIRL OR NOT AND HE LOOKS AT THEM WHILE CONTINUING HIS PACE AND THEY LOOK BACK AT HIM.
“Take control of my body
And possession of my mind
I’m a victim of your voodoo
You’re the goddess in my eyes
Stick your needles in my back
All just to throw my love away
Take my vision and make me blind
Just so I can hear you say”
HE IS NOW ALONE IN A STREET NOT KNOWING WHERE SHE IS GONE, JUST CONTEMPLATING WHAT IT IS THAT HE MUST DO. WHICH THIS HAPPENS DURING THE BRIDGE OF THE SONG.
“She said
Do you feel it in your soul
Would you give it all
Just to have some more”
NOW HE IS FED UP WITH THIS GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE, SO HE STARTS REALIZING THAT HE NEEDS TO GO AND FIND HER.
“She said
Do I make you feel divine?
Would you sell your soul
For mine”
***DRUM FILL***
HE BEGINS TO RUN LOOKING FOR HER.
“I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo
I said
Give me a little Voodoo”
AT THE END OF THE CHORUS HE COMES TO A HAULT AS HE FINDS HER WAITING FOR HIM JUST STANDING THERE. THEY STAND FACING EACH OTHER JUST LOOKING
AT ONE ANOTHER.
***Camera dollies forward and on a match on motion cuts to the same frame in the following shot***
(Did not end up shooting this scene)
NOW IT IS JUST MAX STANDING IN THE SAME SPOT REVEALING THAT HE WAS IMAGINING THIS THE ENTIRE TIME.
SILENCE AND NIGHT SOUNDS FILL THE ATMOSPHERE.
